Affordable Therapy in DC: Quality Mental Health Care That Fits Your Budget

Looking for the right therapist can feel overwhelming. Finding one you can afford can feel almost impossible.

Pricing is one of the questions we hear most from clients, and we get it. If you’ve searched “affordable therapy near me,” you know that mix of hope and worry. At Kennedy Counseling Collective, we believe your financial situation shouldn’t keep you from getting compassionate, high-quality mental health care.

Private practice therapy is an investment. But there’s more than one path to get there. Out-of-network insurance benefits, sliding scale fees, and supervised intern programs all make quality care more accessible.

What Are Your Options for Affordable Therapy in DC?

There’s more than one path to affordable care. Depending on your situation, you may be able to lower your costs by:

  • Using out-of-network insurance benefits
  • Asking about sliding scale or reduced-fee options
  • Working with a supervised graduate-level therapy intern
  • Choosing a practice built around accessibility and transparent pricing

At Kennedy Counseling Collective, we see cost as part of the conversation. It’s never a barrier that keeps you from getting support.

Your Insurance May Help Cover Private Practice Therapy

We encourage our clients to always ask. Many people don’t realize their plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, which can reimburse a portion of therapy costs.

Coverage varies from plan to plan. It’s worth checking your benefits before assuming private practice therapy is out of reach, and worth considering when you choose or renew your health insurance.

We know insurance can be confusing. Our Matching Specialist, Lindsey, offers a free 15-minute consultation to help you understand your out-of-network benefits and find the therapist who’s the best fit for you.

We’ll share a more detailed guide to therapy insurance benefits later this fall.

Many Therapists Offer Sliding Scale and Reduced Fees

Asking about cost is completely okay, even when it feels uncomfortable.

Many therapists offer sliding scale or reduced-fee options based on your financial circumstances. Every practice sets its own policy and can’t accommodate every request. But a willingness to talk openly about affordability is usually a good sign that a practice values access.

At Kennedy Counseling Collective, many of our clinicians offer flexible pricing because finances should never be the reason someone goes without support.

How KCC Makes Money Conversations Feel Safe

Accessibility isn’t just about different price points. It’s about making conversations about money feel clear, respectful, and free of judgment.

Therapist Morgan Barney is one example. She joined KCC as a reduced-fee intern before becoming a full-time clinician. Inspired by the widely recognized Green Bottle approach, she developed her own Pink Bottle framework to help clients understand three fee levels based on their financial circumstances.

It’s one piece of our broader commitment to transparency, flexibility, and trust.

Why Seeing a Therapy Intern Is a Smart Choice

Our supervised clinical internship program is one of the ways we expand access to care. Healing shouldn’t come with a price tag that keeps you from getting the support you deserve.

Working with an intern is one of the most effective ways to access affordable therapy. Graduate-level interns bring fresh knowledge, real enthusiasm, and a strong commitment to learning. And they never work alone.

When you work with a KCC intern, an entire clinical team stands behind your care, supervising and guiding our interns.

Carefully Selected

Each intern joins KCC through a rigorous interview and reference process. We look for graduate clinicians who are warm, thoughtful, curious, and deeply committed to trauma-informed and healing-centered care.

Closely Supervised

Our interns receive weekly in-house supervision from experienced clinicians, including senior members of our clinical team like Jasalynne Northcross and Jamie Alongi. Your care benefits from ongoing collaboration and clinical guidance throughout your work together.

Trained in Evidence-Based Practices

We partner with respected universities so our interns learn the latest evidence-based approaches while gaining real clinical experience before graduation.

Meet Our Fall 2026 Therapy Interns

This fall, we’re welcoming two exceptional graduate-level clinicians to our Petworth office. Both provide low-cost and sliding-scale therapy while receiving close supervision from our experienced clinical team.

Mackenzie “Mac” Ford

Mac joins KCC from the Catholic University of America’s Master of Social Work program. With more than a decade in public health and specialized training in trauma-informed care for children and adolescents, she brings a thoughtful, compassionate perspective to her work.

She has a special interest in play therapy, supporting children, teens, and young adults through life’s transitions.

Mac begins seeing clients the week of August 31.

Lydia Thompson

Lydia joins KCC from the University of Maryland School of Social Work. She’ll be supervised by our Intern Coordinator, Jasalynne Northcross, and her clients benefit from both her graduate training and her ongoing collaboration with KCC’s clinical team.

Lydia begins seeing clients on September 8.

Frequently Asked Questions About Affordable Therapy in DC

How much does therapy cost in DC?

Therapy costs in Washington, DC vary based on a therapist’s experience, specialty, and whether they accept insurance. Many private practices also offer sliding scale fees, reduced-cost services, or supervised intern programs that make therapy more affordable.

What is sliding scale therapy?

Sliding scale therapy adjusts the cost of care based on your financial circumstances. Some therapists use household income or financial need to set a reduced fee, making therapy accessible for clients who might otherwise go without it.

Are therapy interns qualified?

Yes. Therapy interns are graduate students completing advanced clinical training through accredited counseling or social work programs. At Kennedy Counseling Collective, interns go through a careful selection process and receive ongoing supervision from experienced licensed clinicians while they see clients.

Can therapy interns diagnose or treat mental health conditions?

Therapy interns provide counseling and therapeutic support under the supervision of licensed clinicians. Depending on their program and state regulations, they may take part in assessment and diagnosis as part of their training, always with regular oversight to ensure high-quality, ethical care.

How can I find affordable therapy without insurance?

If you don’t have insurance, or your plan doesn’t cover therapy, you still have options. Ask about sliding scale fees, supervised intern programs, reduced-fee appointments, and out-of-network reimbursement. A free consultation can help you find the option that fits your needs and your budget.
